The Giving Blog community is heating up. A number of strong voices are debating the important issues facing the world of Giving (or philanthropy, charity, etc, even what to call the topic is up for debate). More and more, the various bloggers are commenting on each other’s point of view. What’s needed now is a framework to bring together the best posts on various topics to give readers access to various points of view and to subject the authors to the kind of scrutiny that refines and improves ideas.
What’s a Blog Carnival?
According to BlogCarnival.com, a Blog Carnival is a particular kind of blog community. There are many kinds of blogs, and they contain articles on many kinds of topics. Blog Carnivals typically collect together links pointing to blog articles on a particular topic. A Blog Carnival is like a magazine. It has a title, a topic, editors, contributors, and an audience. Editions of the carnival typically come out on a regular basis (e.g. every Monday, or on the first of the month). Each edition is a special blog article that consists of links to all the contributions that have been submitted, often with the editor’s opinions or remarks.
There is so much stuff in the blog-o-sphere, just finding interesting stuff is hard. If there is a carnival for a topic you are interested in, following that carnival is a great way to learn what bloggers are saying about that topic. If you are blogging on that topic, the carnival is the place to share your work with like-minded bloggers.
What is The Giving Carnival?
The Giving Carnival is a monthly event that gathers the best blog posts on various topics related to Giving (philanthropy, charity, etc).
Where can I read The Giving Carnival?
Each month a different blog will host and edit the carnival. Anyone can contribute a submission on that month’s topic (which will be announced in advance). The host blog’s author will collect the submissions, decide which ones to publish and then write a post on their blog that introduces that month’s issue and links to the various submissions.
When will The Giving Carnival begin?
The Giving Carnival will run on the first business day of each month. However, the first edition is currently being rushed to press and will appear on Tactical Philanthropy on January 23rd.
What will the first edition be about?
The LA Times articles (found here and here) about the Gates Foundation investment policy has spurred a huge debate in the Giving Blog community. This edition will focus on various bloggers’ thoughts on how the Gates Foundation should be conducting their investment policy, what the world of philanthropy should learn from the debate, or other Giving related thoughts and ideas that are centered around the current debate.
How can I submit a post for the next edition?
