Thanks for that post Sean.... Wow!!! Very cool. That jives with a lot of what Tapscott says in Wikinomics about open source science and innovation. Great read.

I think we're entering a world of not just Web 2.0, but Nonprofit 3.0. More thoughts here:

Great post! I agree, there's so many opportunities for organizations to make a difference with social media. I also think it levels the playing field for smaller organizations who can't afford to spend millions on marketing.

Influence matters IF you gain via other people's actions. Philanthropy is unique in that it doesn't matter if my grant or your grant improves the world, the world is still improved for all of us.

Sean, great post and insight. Our clients have had great success with peer-to-peer fundraising tools and are really pushing that success into the world of social media. While the social media dollars might not be staggering yet, the data is starting to show the value attributed to the philanthropic influencer is felt both online and offline. One of our healthcare clients shared with me that using online tools and social media to inspire the right "influencers" to visit elected officials helped them gain millions in appropriations for their research - to borrow your line they wanted to reach "the one whose activities creates the most impact regardless of who actually makes the grant." Influencing the influencers.
