The Economist reports on new research as to why people give to charity. Economists take as a given (but do not prove) that people are primarily self interested. My argument in favor of self-actualization as a driving force is meant to tie together self-interest with community interest and reconcile the two rather than force self-interest to be at odds with altruism.
