My friend Ed Skloot of Duke University argues that the Gates Foundation, which gives away each year an amount larger than the entire endowment of all by 15 other foundations, is fundamentally different than other foundations, not just larger. One of his points centers on the use of “soft power” or public influence that Gates deploys and that I’ve argued in the past is one of the most underused tools in the philanthropic toolbox.

Most interesting data point to me: Few foundations gather feedback from beneficiaries, yet those that do report having a stronger understanding of their results.
